As the leaves along the Lake Michigan shoreline turn to brilliant shades of amber and crimson, Holland, Michigan, becomes a postcard-perfect fall getaway. Whether you’re strolling the downtown streets with a hot cider in hand, watching master pumpkin carvers at work, or savoring farm-fresh flavors, a fall weekend here is equal parts relaxing and exciting. Here’s what your perfect vacation in Holland Michigan could look like this fall!
Friday Evening – Arrival & Cozy Start
For dinner, start your weekend at Boatwerks Waterfront Restaurant. Even on a crisp October night, their lake views are unbeatable. Order a hearty bowl of whitefish chowder or a plate of Great Lakes perch, and toast to a weekend of adventure.
After that, head to the Holland State Park just as the golden hour lights up Lake Michigan. Take a quick walk along the shoreline—yes, even in fall, the waves are mesmerizing and the sunsets are legendary.
Then, located just a mile down the road, settle into The Beach House for the evening and cozy up with a good read, sit out on the patio or have a movie night.
Saturday Morning – Pickleball, Scenic Views, Farmers Market
Start the day with some pickleball! The nearby courts are brand new and well maintained. If pickleball isn’t your thing, instead take a climb up Mt. Pisgah Dune Boardwalk. The 239 steps lead you to sweeping views of Lake Michigan, “Big Red” Lighthouse, and a quilt of fall color stretching inland. Be sure to bring your camera—this is peak autumn photo material.
Then, take a short drive to stroll the award winning Holland Farmers Market. In the fall, the stalls are overflowing with local apples, pears, pumpkins, and fresh-baked donuts. Don’t skip the “Oh So Cheezy” dip coupled with a warm pretzel from The Knot Spot. It was one of our latest favorite foodie finds! So much so we got a few extra pretzels for late night snackin’ back at TheBeach House.
Saturday Afternoon – Fall Fest Fun
If you’ve timed your trip for early October, Fall Fest is a must. Downtown comes alive with street performers, horse-drawn hayrides, and professional pumpkin carvers creating jaw-dropping sculptures right on 8th Street. By evening, the carved pumpkins are lit and casting a warm glow over the storefronts.
Between activities, pop into shops like Fustini’s Oils & Vinegars & Cherry Republic for tastings, shop the local boutiques, gift shops and specialty stores. Combined with beautiful nearby parks and theaters, there’s truly something for everyone.
Saturday Evening – A Taste of Holland
For dinner, head to Seventy-Six for an upscale but relaxed meal. Their modern American menu features seasonal specials—think butternut squash risotto or cider-glazed pork. Otherwise, if you’re in the mood for something casual, Butch’s Dry Dock has pub seating adjacent to the formal dining room. The sourdough bread is to die for!
After dinner, splurge on a drink from Obstacle No. 1. This handsomely appointed lounge offers a distinguished combination of whimsy and sophistication in both the cocktails and atmosphere. That’s a direct quote from the website – which puts out seasonal drink menus too!
Sunday Morning – History & Comfort Food
Ease into your last day with breakfast at The Windmill—a Holland institution known for giant cinnamon rolls and delicious omelets. Pair breakfast with a hot latte and watch the morning light spill over 8th Street.
Before heading home, stop at Windmill Island Gardens for a walk among the historic windmill and fall flowers. Even in cooler months, the grounds are peaceful and full of Dutch charm.
