West Michigan is home to some of the most beautiful freshwater beaches in the country, offering everything from soft sandy shores and towering dunes to charming beach towns and breathtaking sunsets over Lake Michigan. Whether you’re planning a family getaway, a relaxing weekend, or an outdoor adventure, there’s a beach that’s perfect for you. In this West Michigan beach guide, we’ll highlight some of the best beaches to visit and what makes each one worth adding to your summer bucket list. With The Beach House at Lake Street as your home base, you’re only a short drive to each of these unforgettable parks! Some things to note: each of these parks does require a paid pass for entry that you can purchase onsite and generally the busiest time of day at the parks is 11-3 so plan ahead and get in early!
Holland State Park
Number 1 on our list is Holland State Park and for a good reason. Holland State Park is located on Lake Michigan along the Lake Macatawa Channel. With an expansive soft, sandy beach, there is plenty of room for sunbathing, sandcastle making, volleyball, and more. The iconic Big Red Lighthouse is just on the other side of channel and a perfect photo op. We love Holland State Park for its:
- Perfect Sandy Beach
- Public Restrooms, Picnic Tables, and Beach Shop
- Children’s Play Area
- Expansive Swimming Area (just watch the flag color for the day)
- Accessible for people who may have trouble walking, flat beach (no stairs or dunes to climb down), and wheelchair friendly pathways that go out into the sand
Tunnel Park
Number 2 on our list is Tunnel Park. This county park is just up the road from Holland State Park and The Beach House. The wooded setting of half of the park makes it an ideal setting for hosting groups and picnics. While some spend time on the beach, others can spend time under the trees, enjoying some reprieve from the sun. Tunnel Park is known for it’s iconic tunnel leading to Lake Michigan and kids will also love the dune that is perfect for climbing and getting some energy out! Our favorite highlights include:

Kirk Park
Kirk Park is a lesser known, but lovely park about 15 minutes north of Holland. The wooded setting features hiking trails, paved pathways, and a beach area that spans 1/3 of a mile. This 68 acre park is the perfect spot to spend a summer day. At Kirk Park you’ll find:
- Hiking Trails and Scenic Bluffs
- Public Restrooms, Picnic Tables, and Grills
- Reservable Pavilions for Group Gatherings
- Dog Friendly Beach
Oval Beach
Next stop is Oval Beach in Douglas. Just a short drive from Holland, this park is perfect for a day of sunbathing but is also a wonderful sunset spot! It has soft sandy beaches, clear water, and amazing views of Lake Michigan. The peaceful atmosphere and natural scenery make Oval Beach a favorite spot for families, couples, and anyone looking for a fun day by the lake. On your way in, stop by the Root Beer Barrel for a homemade root beer. What we love about Oval Beach:

Saugatuck Dunes State Park
Last but certainly not least is Saugatuck Dunes State Park. Saugatuck Dunes is located just outside of Saugatuck near the historic Felt Mansion. This park is perfect for those looking for some hiking and beach time. This park features 13 miles of trails and 300 acres of protected natural area. The 3/4 mile beach hike will surprise you with hilly (but beautiful) twists, turns, and climbs. But at the end, you are met with a gorgeous view of Lake Michigan. At Saugatuck Dunes, we love:
